Another Schism?!

Students - I am out of the classroom today, but Mr. Morris will be teaching the material. If you are gone, as I know many are, please take copy of the notes, click the link for the left side activity and watch the videos down at the bottom of the page. Happy Spring Break, if I don't see you Friday!

MAIN IDEAS AND WWK:
Main Idea:  The Catholic church lost power in the 1300s after being challenged by kings. The Church split for 39 years and never regained its former power afterwards.

Schism--split due to difference of beliefs
Pope Boniface--commands French king Philip IV to stop naming his own bishops (lay investiture)
Papal Bull--an order from the Pope that must be obeyed

What happens:
Philip arrests and imprisons Boniface, who dies
Philip names new pope and moves the church to Avignon, France.
Another pope is selected in Rome.  There are now two popes.
1414:  Council of Constance:  All three popes fired and a new one is named.

New men disagree with Church:
John Wycliffe--Englishman.  Believes humans only need Bible to get to heaven. Translates the Bible into the English vernacular.
John Huss--Czech priest who agrees with Wycliffe.  He is burned at the stake for heresy.

Left side:
Please print the following foldable on one sheet of paper (both sides are used) OR print into two and paste into notebook in an alternative way. Follow the directions and color the map.

If you were gone, watch the videos:
Western Schism (4 min) (shows the map for the left side!)
Jan Huss, Wycliffe, and the Papal Schism (15 min)

If you're a new student (or parent!) let me give you a quick tour.

TABS ABOVE:
  • Classroom guidelines - explains expectations, rules, required materials and missing / late policies.

  • Daily Journals - all journal prompts are listed. These are (almost) daily mini-writing assignments. If you're absent or missing a journal, check there!
  • Homework assignments - any and all active or past homework assignments will be listed here. I try to keep homework to a minimum, but expect homework a couple times a month. Be aware any notebook work not finished in class is the responsibility of the student and must be completed at home.
  • About the teacher - info about me, my degrees, and tidbits about me!
Additional information you need to know:
  • All students are required to complete a trimester project.
  • All honors students are required to also complete book project.

    • NOTE: The main ideas and words worth knowing will be added to Monday's notes as we focused on the reading assignment in class.

    • Trimester Projects are due! Please make plans to present your project in class, about 3-5 minutes.
    • Honors students: Book projects are due! Please make plans to present your book in class, about 3-5 minutes.
    • Coat of Arms project and writing assignment: due Tuesday, March 4.
    • Exam: Friday, March 7th. Feudalism through Crusades.
In order to get the blog to load faster, I am posting MME's a bit differently -

Causes of the Crusades:

1.  Holy Land controlled by Muslims and the worry that Muslims would not let Christians make pilgrimages to the Holy Land
2. Constantinople (Eastern Roman Empire) asks west for help against Muslims.
3.  Troublesome knights in Europe threatening the people and the church.  Sending on a crusade would get rid of them.
4. Landless younger sons.  Younger sons could not inherit land.  This way they could seek their fortune in the holy land.
5. Adventure

7.  Merchants wanting wealth

I will be sending subscription information home with you to share with your parents so they can help you succeed as well! This program is free of charge to use, no hidden fees, but your normal provider messaging rates would still apply.

What Remind101 is:
  • general class information texts sent out such as due date reminders, test days, possible extra credit, homework, etc.
What Remind101 ISN'T:
  • a way to contact me directly to ask me questions about assignments or class related questions. To do that, please email me or talk to me in class.

PARENTS: If you are uncomfortable in any way or would prefer to remove your students from any Remind101 related activities in my class, please contact me via email and I will be happy to remove them. This is a 100% volunteer activity and is in no way graded.

Reminder for Monday

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen (Jellybeans? Gentlebots?)

As a reminder, we will be switching to the interactive notebook format Monday.

If your notebook is filling up, please make the attempt to get a new one. Comp books are preferred, but spiral is fine if it is what you have. We'll be using a lot of space!

Also, if you have tape, highlighters, colored pencils, or glue sticks, bring those to class. I'm not asking you to go shopping for a bunch of supplies, but if you have one or two of the items above, bring them with you.

Monday, we'll take a break from history, get our notebooks set up, and go over my syllabus.
Tuesday, we'll head right into the Byzantine empire in all it's shiny glory. Anyone who leaves a comment on this post with the name of the famous Byzantine empress pictured will be the lucky recipient of extra credit.

I hope everyone does well on the test and has a great weekend! Come Monday, we're all set to go!
