Feudalism!!!!!

Daily Objectives and Announcements

  • Mr. Morris handed back his tests as well as the honors essays. If you didn't get your test or essay back, please talk to him!
  • REMINDER: There are only a few short weeks for your trimester projects to be completed AND presented! Don't get behind!
  • I have not yet handed back the tests from Wednesday. Please be patient with me as I try to get them done.
  • We took a look at a comic which talked about the division of Charlemagne's empire and Viking invasions. Please see me in class for this handout.

Main Ideas and Words Worth Knowing (Right Side)

MAIN IDEA: Feudalism rose up in Europe as a way for people to protect themselves from Vikings, Muslim invaders, and others.
 
WORDS WORTH KNOWING

Feudalism:  system of obligation where land was traded for service (military or other)

Lord:  Landowner, usually a king or high official

Vassal:  Someone given land by the lord in exchange for military service and taxes

Knight:  a highly-trained mounted warrior who fights for a vassal
 
Peasant: a farmer who rented land from the vassal aka villein

Serf:  a peasant tied to the land aka cottar 

Tithe:  10% of all money earned goes to Church

Fief:  Land given to a vassal by a lord usually as a manor


For our left side activity, we drew a feudal triangle similar to this one.
