Stained Glass Project

Stained Glass Activity
Morris / Donnelly World History

During the Middle Ages, few books existed.  Most people could not read or write.  For many, the Church was the center of teaching and religious education.  The stained glass windows served as textbooks for religion, history, and other stories of everyday life.  Imagine you are a stained glass window craftsman.  Tell a story of your life, your country, your school year, the seasons, or other activity that is important to you.  You are also free to tell a Biblical story, including any story from any scripture you use in your own life.  You have two options of shapes. For the template, look at the window as if it were a clock.  Start your story at the position that would be one o’clock and end the story at the position that would be eleven o’clock.  Use the center for other drawings that add to your story or that tell the overall theme of your story. You
may use another stained glass window shape, with permission.

RUBRIC: (20 points total)
- Telling a visual story - 5 points
- Creativity - 5 points
- Color and Ink (black "lead" lines) - 5 points
- Neatness - 5 points

Note: the printed copy of the rubric says the project is 40 points. That was changed in class and the assignment is worth 20 points.

DUE DATE: Weds. March 19.

You will receive some time in class to do this project, but you may need to work on it at home.

This is similar, but more complicated than the one given out in class. You can google other templates or ask me for a copy.

Knights and Their Ladies!

Daily Objectives

  • Journal (click here for journal list)
  • Review
  • Medieval Mish Mash
    • Notes AND Documents!
  • Coat of Arms
Today we're learning backwards -- you'll work on inference -- making predictions based on evidence and then at the end of the class, we get the whole story. If you're confused in class, that's okay! We're trying to stretch our brains in a new way.

Main idea: Knights in the Middle Ages were highly trained and followed a strict code of honor called chivalry.

Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine started the idea of courtly love which meant ladies were treated with respect. Troubadors sang songs about courtly love.

Words Worth Knowing:
Squire – knight in training who helped the knight with his equipment and horse, started at age 14
Page – a boy training to be a knight; started at age 7
Knight – a mounted, highly trained warrior known for his loyalty and honor
Chivalry – Code of conduct an honor, courage and loyalty adopted by Knights
Tournaments – a festival where knights could practice fighting skills in fake battles
Courtly love - men should treat women with the highest honor and respect. Idea by Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine
Troubadours - musician who sang about courtly love

Left side:
Document Work in class - this is an assignment so you need to see me to make it up.

To listen to a troubadour's song, click here. If you're interested in more details on troubadours, look here. For more information and details on courtly love, click here.

Coat of Arms Project

DUE DATE: TUESDAY, MARCH 3.

Rubric for Coat of Arms:
 Total possible:   50 points
  •  Shield (5 points)
  •  Helmet/Headgear (5 points)
  • Wreath  (5 points)
  • Crest/Plume  (5 points)
  • Mantle  (5 points)
  • Supports (2)  (5 points)
  • Base  (5 points)
  • War Cry  (5 points)
  • Neatness (5 points)
  • Color  (5 points)
Rubric for Writing Portion of Project: Using descriptive language, explain your coat of arms.
  Total possible: 25 points

(This is for all students, not just honors!)
  • Descriptive Writing: using the five senses to describe what you are writing!
  • Select five components from your coat of arms.
  • One or two sentences per item: explain what they are and why you chose them. Use as many details as possible (this is what I'm looking for in this assignment).
Example: For my helmet, I chose a bright red, large apple with a green leaf. I picked an apple because rather than a soldier, I am a teacher and the apple is a symbol of education and in Medieval heraldry, the apple is a symbol of peace.

REMIND 101 - subscribe for due dates, class info, and more!

Hello everyone!

I'm REALLY excited to announce that I've set up a REMIND101 account for all World History Hours. This is a fantastic program which allows me to send out texts to you or your parent's phones without ever needing to know your actual phone number. You can subscribe using the following information. I will be sending subscription information home with you to share with your parents so they can help you succeed as well! This program is free of charge to use, no hidden fees, but your normal provider messaging rates would still apply.

What Remind101 is:
  • general class information texts sent out such as due date reminders, test days, possible extra credit, homework, etc.
What Remind101 ISN'T:
  • a way to contact me directly to ask me questions about assignments or class related questions. To do that, please email me or talk to me in class.

PARENTS: If you are uncomfortable in any way or would prefer to remove your students from any Remind101 related activities in my class, please contact me via email and I will be happy to remove them. This is a 100% volunteer activity and is in no way graded.

Interactive Notebooks, Day One

Are you liking the notebooks so far? Confused? Pulling out the colored pencils?

I'm okay with any of these answers. It means your brain is working!

To review the steps of what we went over today:

No Daily Objectives since we were setting up our notebooks.

Title Page:

9th World History
Name
Hour
School

Table of Contents: 3+ pages titled

Right side Syllabus - it's posted on its own page here. Take a look at it. Print it off if you need to put it in your notebooks! (If you don't have access to a printer, that's cool too. I have hard copies.) Not sure how to tape it in your notebooks? Ask me and/or I will try to get some pictures up this week.

Left side Syllabus - "Give me Five." Title your page. Underneath write: 5 things I learned from the syllabus. Slap your hand in the middle of the page and outline it. Read the syllabus. Write something you learned in each of the fingers. Bonus: write something extra you learned in the "palm." (THIS IS HOMEWORK IF NOT FINISHED IN CLASS.)

Right side: Notebook Guidelines - can be found posted on its own page here. Same rules as syllabus.

Left side: Notebook Guidelines - "Draw 3 For Me." Draw three things you can do on the left side of the notebook. Check out the guidelines for examples. (THIS IS HOMEWORK IF NOT FINISHED IN CLASS.)

Homework:
Any Left side activities not finished in class today. I will do notebook checks for the first time Friday or Monday!

Other tips:
More effort means more points! Does this mean I grade on artistic ability? No. I'm grading on EFFORT. If you have tried your best, you'll get the points and possibly extra points as well! THIS IS YOUR TEXTBOOK!

COLOR ON LEFT SIDE ONLY - except color sorting for WWK (don't know what that means? Tune in tomorrow!)

Personalize your notebook!

The Fall of Rome Homework Assignment!

Today in class we did our first DBQ - a document based discovery on the fall of Rome.

Homework was assigned with this activity. It is worth 20 points and due Friday, Jan. 24.

One question that has been asked often: How do I reference the document when I don't have copies? To gain full points for this portion, all you need to do is refer to an example from the documents. Example:

How did barbarians influence the fall of Rome?

Answer example 1: The fall of Rome was influenced by the invasions of different barbarian tribes. Some of the tribes listed on the document map were Vandals,Visigoths, or Saxons.

Answer example 2: Rome's decline was caused in part by barbarian invasions. Because of the invasions, more money was needed to fund the armies which was a problem according to several documents.

For this first assignment, I will be pretty lenient about wording for answers. I do not expect you to name the document or cite your sources. Don't stress! As a reminder, I am always available in the classroom during lunch so if you need it, I'm here to help! We also had an MME (multimedia extravaganza) in class to talk about the fall of Rome in more detail.

If you would like to review the MME, document packet (remember there is no number 6) or need a new assignment sheet: you can download those below.
