Life on the Manor

Daily Objectives:

  • For those of you who asked for project ideas, here's a list of Medieval crafts and projects you could try out.
  • We discussed test scores (now available on PowerSchool) and answered questions. I am unable to return tests as I still have a few people needing to make it up. Also, if you're interested in a re-take, let me know ASAP!
  • Oath of Fealty
    • Rather than a journal, we read this Anglo-Saxon Oath of Fealty. Then, we wrote a 3 sentence oath of fealty of our own (you choose who you are swearing your loyalty and life to!)
  • Lesson on Manors with MME
    • Left Side: Feudal Manor Graphic
    • Extra Credit Left Side (if you have room) - Draw a serf and list 3 facts about or responsibilities serfs had. (Worth points towards this week's notebook check!)
  • Feudalism Game as review
Main Idea:
Each fief contained at least one manor which contained a village, church, manor house, and stream
where peasants and nobility lived.

Words Worth Knowing

Manor: the estate within a fief that the lord had control over as well as his house on the estate.

Fallow: land left unplanted so the soil could recover and gain nutrients again

Mill: a building on the manor that used wind or water to grind corn or grain which was owned by the lord

Parsonage: a home for the clergy on the manor

Common pasture: land owned by the lord that peasants and serfs had the right to use for their animals

If you were gone:
Check out this webquest - Skip to the feudal pyramid and begin "Life on the Manor"  to the end of the page. The manor picture will be the left side for our notebooks today!
