Daily Objectives:
  • Journal (click here for journal)
  • Word Wall and Review
  • Cathedral MME and notes (MME link posted after end of school day.)
  • Video and drawing a diagram - round vs. pointed arch? 2 other differences between the two?
MAIN IDEA: In the Middle Ages, giant churches called Cathedrals were built to honor god.
Words worth knowing
Cathedral:  a large church, home to a bishop. Housed holy relics.
Relic:  a piece of a saint or other sacred object
Stained Glass:   picture stories from the Bible and church history
Romanesque Architecture:  early cathedral -short, squat, small windows and heavy walls.
Gothic Architecture:  tall, graceful churches with large windows and narrow supports, made possible by buttresses.
Flying Buttresses:  an external support that holds up a wall.
Gargoyle:  a stone statue on the outside of a cathedral.

Left side activity: Watch this video about the difference between Romanesque and Gothic Cathedrals. For your "left side activity," draw and label the different types of arches used in these cathedrals. List at least two other differences.
Think you've got it down?
Take the Romanesque vs. Gothic quiz to test your knowledge! These pictures are taken in High-Def by a photographer Trey Ratkin.

Life on the Manor

Daily Objectives:

  • For those of you who asked for project ideas, here's a list of Medieval crafts and projects you could try out.
  • We discussed test scores (now available on PowerSchool) and answered questions. I am unable to return tests as I still have a few people needing to make it up. Also, if you're interested in a re-take, let me know ASAP!
  • Oath of Fealty
    • Rather than a journal, we read this Anglo-Saxon Oath of Fealty. Then, we wrote a 3 sentence oath of fealty of our own (you choose who you are swearing your loyalty and life to!)
  • Lesson on Manors with MME
    • Left Side: Feudal Manor Graphic
    • Extra Credit Left Side (if you have room) - Draw a serf and list 3 facts about or responsibilities serfs had. (Worth points towards this week's notebook check!)
  • Feudalism Game as review
Main Idea:
Each fief contained at least one manor which contained a village, church, manor house, and stream
where peasants and nobility lived.

Words Worth Knowing

Manor: the estate within a fief that the lord had control over as well as his house on the estate.

Fallow: land left unplanted so the soil could recover and gain nutrients again

Mill: a building on the manor that used wind or water to grind corn or grain which was owned by the lord

Parsonage: a home for the clergy on the manor

Common pasture: land owned by the lord that peasants and serfs had the right to use for their animals

If you were gone:
Check out this webquest - Skip to the feudal pyramid and begin "Life on the Manor"  to the end of the page. The manor picture will be the left side for our notebooks today!

I'm okay with any of these answers. It means your brain is working!

To review the steps of what we went over today:

No Daily Objectives since we were setting up our notebooks.

Table of Contents: 3+ pages titled

Right side Syllabus - it's posted on its own page here. Take a look at it. Print it off if you need to put it in your notebooks! (If you don't have access to a printer, that's cool too. I have hard copies.) Not sure how to tape it in your notebooks? Ask me and/or I will try to get some pictures up this week.

Left side Syllabus - "Give me Five." Title your page. Underneath write: 5 things I learned from the syllabus. Slap your hand in the middle of the page and outline it. Read the syllabus. Write something you learned in each of the fingers. Bonus: write something extra you learned in the "palm." (THIS IS HOMEWORK IF NOT FINISHED IN CLASS.)

Right side: Notebook Guidelines - can be found posted on its own page here. Same rules as syllabus.

Left side: Notebook Guidelines - "Draw 3 For Me." Draw three things you can do on the left side of the notebook. Check out the guidelines for examples. (THIS IS HOMEWORK IF NOT FINISHED IN CLASS.)

Byzantine Empire and Justinian Code

Notes - Tuesday, Jan. 28

Main Ideas:
Roman culture continued in the Byzantine Empire for a thousand years after the fall of Rome. They considered themselves Roman.

Emperor Justinian regained a lot of the old Roman Empire and helped to preserve Roman law. He also helped restore Constantinople.

Words Worth Knowing:
Byzantine Empire – eastern Roman Empire that lasted 1,000 years after the Western Empire fell (named after original city Byzantium)
Justinian I – emperor of Byzantine and reconquered much of the  old Roman empire, aka Justinian the Great
Justinian Code – Emperor Justinian took 400 years of Roman laws and combined them into one book of 5,000 laws.  This book was used for 900 years and is the basis for some laws used today. (Included laws on marriage, slavery, property, womens rights, crime)
Theodora – wife of Justinian, saved his rule by telling him not to flee during a riot, very influential during Justinian’s rule.
Constantinople – center of the Byzantine Empire; most influential city in Europe for 900 years.

Hagia Sophia – church built by Justinian, greatest Christian church in the east until it was turned into a mosque. Still stands today. Name means “church of Holy Wisdom”

This video is a Crash Course on the Fall of Rome through the Byzantine Empire. If you were gone, it wouldn't hurt to watch all of it (12 minutes), but we watched the last 5 minutes in class.

For a quick run-down of Justinian I, check out this video!
