England and the Magna Carta

Daily Objectives:

  • Left Side: Venn Diagram of the differences and similarities between how England formed and how the US formed. -5 points per section of differences - 3 in center of similarity or difference.

MAIN IDEAS:
The people in England won rights from their kings by refusing to pay taxes until they got representation.  The US later adopted ideas of Magna Carta.

WWK:
Doomsday book: record of all English towns and farms for taxes
Henry II:  descendant of William the Conquerer who added French land to kingdom. Influenced England and later US with courts, judges, trial by jury, written laws
Richard the Lion-Hearted:   King who was son of Henry II, dies on Crusade, replaced by Prince John
King John:  taxed people harshly, spent money on wars, weak king

Magna Carta:  (Great Charter), 1215.  signed by King John that gave rights to English citizens and limited king’s powers.  Included:
·         no taxation without representation
·         jury trial
·         equal protection under the law
